adit_787 asks:
Hey there,
I'm an IB Diploma programme student in my 2nd year from India, and I am applying through UCAS for the UK universities. I want to finish my application by the end of this month, but my school says they would provide the predicted grades by January.
Will my application will be affected if I apply based on my secondary school marks, or should I wait for the predicted grades?
etutor answers:
So much depends on the subject for which you are applying. If, for example, it is Medicine or Dentistry, you are already too late - application deadline was 15th October. If it is for Law or Economics (and related subjects) you need to get your application in without further delay. The general rule is the more popular the subject and the more prestigious the universities chosen, the earlier the better. There is a strong positive relationship between top class applicants and September/October applications, including from outside the UK.
Your school is obliged by UCAS to provide predicted grades. These will appear in your referee's reference. So you must tell your school that you are ready to send off your form NOW. There is no case whatever for delay - it will harm your chances of receiving offers from universities. If your application is based only on your secondary school marks and is delayed until January, this would tend to place you at a disadvantage in practically popular subjects and at top universities - unless these marks are absolutely outstanding.
So my strong advice is do not delay. Good luck with your application.
